Why buy pasture eggs?
Pasture raised eggs are laid by hens that spend most of their time outdoors on pasture, foraging for grass, insects, seeds, and other natural foods, with shelter available at night or in bad weather. Conventionally raised eggs typically come from hens kept in indoor battery cages or crowded barns with limited or no outdoor access, fed a standardized grain-based diet.
Here’s why pasture-raised eggs are superior
Nutritional Advantages
Pasture-raised eggs often contain higher levels of several key nutrients due to the hens’ diverse, natural diet and sunlight exposure:
Omega-3 fatty acids are 2–6 times higher, supporting heart and brain health.
Vitamins: Higher vitamin A (up to ~38–50% more), vitamin E (2–3.5 times more), vitamin D (significantly more from sun exposure), and beta-carotene (up to 7–8 times more).
Antioxidants: More lutein, zeaxanthin, and other carotenoids that benefit eye health.
Lower in some fats: Studies show reduced cholesterol and saturated fat.
Animal Welfare
Pasture-raised hens can express natural behaviors like foraging, dust bathing, perching, and socializing. They enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and more space . Conventional systems, even cage free ones, restrict movement, leading to stress, higher disease risk, and behaviors like feather pecking.
Taste and Quality
Many customers enjoy richer flavor, brighter orange yolks, firmer whites, and better texture in pasture-raised eggs, thanks to the varied diet.
Environmental and Sustainability Benefits
Well-managed pasture systems can improve soil health through natural fertilization, support biodiversity, and reduce reliance on concentrated feed crops.
